When you share a bed with someone I have found that you are also sharing something else: dreams. I call this dream sharing. Dream sharing is when a dream enters reality and someone is there to witness this escape from the subconscious.
Mike has a wild imagination and personality when he’s awake, so when he’s asleep it seems that there is no gatekeeper and anything goes. Some times I think he has a full blown circus going on in there when he turns the lights out. Every night’s feature presentation is a little bit more amusing… and a little bit more disturbing. If Freud’s theory of dreams being a representation of his unconscious thoughts and motivations is true – should I be worried?
I have grouped his dreams into three categories:
First there are the delusional dreams. These are the most common of the dreams he shares with me and my favorite. Last night’s occurrence was him screaming, “AREBA!” in my ear and going on to explain that he was trying to warn off an attacking dog. On another occasion I sneezed which resulted in him grabbing me because he thought my head had fallen off. These dreams only give a little light as to what’s really going on in there but when when something escapes his brain into my earshot, I force myself to write down these little gems so I can be sure to make fun of him in the morning.
Then there are what I like to call the “Scream Dreams.” This isn’t like a scary scream but more like a consistently timed yelp. The noise is not too far off from my favorite screaming goat of all time. He has yet to give me an explanation for these dreams, but they keep me awake and laughing.
Lastly, there are the alter ego dreams. These are rare and change but the most recent celebrity he channeled was Adam Levigne. He claimed he had never heard the song “Moves Like Jagger,” but OOO-OOO-OOOOO he certainly had. These usually involve singing and he always seems extremely happy (happy sleeps lightly).
Everyone has strange dreams. I have reoccurring dreams of my teeth falling out, that I never really graduated college, and that I am constantly falling (which has made Mike place a pillow barrier separating us and my flailing limbs). But other than an occasional kick, I keep my dreams to myself. His subconscious, on the other hand, is seriously trying to get out.
Who else has been witness to some good dream sharing?
