It is difficult to adjust from trees, rocks and dirt paths to skyscrapers, cabs and crowded sidewalks. I’ve lived in other cities but each time I leave Colorado I feel like I get further from the beautiful backdrop of Boulder and NYC feels like a world away.

Being in Times Square feels like the furthest you could ever be from a quiet mountain trail. The noises and lights create an unmasked energy and a hard to cure headache. With all the commotion in this city, you need an escape, and luckily there’s one within walking distance. Central Park is the eye of the storm that is Manhattan. The moment you step inside you feel miles away from the chaos that was just a block ago. At times you can be on a path and there is no one in sight. Although this can be a bit unsettling (make sure to look behind you), it is amazing to feel alone in the middle of a city of over a million people. The sound of silence has never sounded sweeter.

However man-made the park is, the trees, plants and wildlife are all very real. NYC knows how to do a park: there are lakes, fields, trails, fountains, art, playgrounds, benches for days and even a castle. Though, I do wonder how you transport a boulder. This city can also erect a 100 foot tree in the middle of Rockefeller Center, so boulder shmoulder. The paths, unlike the streets, are taken care of. You can take a different path every time if you want. In my case, even if I want to take the same path, I will still end up taking a different one. As long as you’re not running late and it doesn’t start raining, getting lost in the park is a rewarding escapade.

The storm does still breathe into the calmness. There is a whirlwind of people going round in counterclockwise circles trying to not collide – and a few lost causes going clockwise. There are runners, rollerblades, cyclists, people who rented bikes thinking the 6 mile ride would be a “walk in the park”, and whatever else those people are doing (is that supposed to be jogging?) – all flying around without insurance. We too joined the race and rented bikes one day. I only had one near pedestrian hit and no broken arms (sorry, mom) and it was the dose of outside recreation we had been craving.

We are lucky enough to live just blocks from this naturalistic retreat and to be able to feel like we’re breathing something other than exhaust. In a city where your moderate income will get you a closet-sized apartment, having this much prime real estate devoted to squirrels and tulips is truly amazing.

[5,33
388,48,47
post-534","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-nyc","category-play","tag-boulder","tag-central-park","tag-times-square
["GET
