Although the bus times and the amount of hair gel left on your window can be a sticky situation, the bus can get you where you want to go for about the same price as a NYC martini.

We like to take the megabus to Massachusetts for important occasions like the welcomed extension of our fat fest with a second Christmas. We got up at 5:30am and went through the bus routine: terrifying high-speed early morning cab ride, deli breakfast sandwiches, line and load. The bus was about 20 minutes late but it was too early to really care; I just wanted to get away from the man kissing the sidewalk next to us. We claimed our usual back row, which offers some additional space, although it does put us at risk with its proximity to the bathroom. Nine out of ten times we are OK, but there was a Ms. 10% on the bus that morning. But I semi-passed out and after about an hour of driving, I felt the bus veering into the exit lane, which is never a good sign. I prefer my bus rides like my shots: straight and fast.

Upon pulling into a McDonald’s rest stop, our driver informed us that she had reached her maximum allotted driving time and that they would be doing a driver switch. Good planning megabus. I tried to continue my unconsciousness to dull the pain, but a man-child in a suit was not so relaxed. He had his New Yorker turned on to full blast and went off on the driver for the inconvenience and the driver apologized again and again as he screamed at her for an uncomfortable amount of time. Feeling defeated and embarrassed, the driver let us all know that it would be 5-10 minutes before the other driver would arrive and to please go ahead and use the restroom and get a coffee. So we took a break from the bus and let the driver know we had no problem with the situation, unlike the man-child having a sissy fit. For life’s time-sensitive and yell-at-an-innocent-stranger-important commitments, don’t take the discount bus, there is certainly no real arrival time guarantee. What we didn’t know, however, is that there is also no guarantee that they will not leave you stranded at McDonald’s. Now let’s talk about a real inconvenience.

“Where’s the bus? No, really, where’s the bus?” The mega-suck had driven off with all our stuff and without any warning or remorse. We mega-cussed up a storm. It was just us and one other stranded girl, and while the bus took off with our luggage, we felt burdened with some extra baggage. I hate to be inconsiderate, but I was more concerned with our kidnapped iPad’s and wallets then her problems. As I immediately began calling megabus’ customer service, the girl didn’t seem too concerned after her initial screams (“Wait, my bag! MYYY BAAAAAAG!”), as she housed an egg mcmuffin. During my attempt to be as nice as I could be while yelling at megabus, I grimaced every time I looked at her egg product covered face. She was lovin’ it. Don’t get me wrong, l have had my secret binge affairs at McDonald’s, but when you reach certain low points in life, I have found that McDonald’s is never, ever, the answer. I didn’t need a pain in the stomach along with my neck.

After several phone calls and Mike taking over as spokesperson, we managed to ensure that the driver would make sure that our bags and valuables wouldn’t get mega-lost, as well as egg face’s bags. We avoided as much awkward interaction with our new friend and made the best of our impromptu trip to the exit 22 rest stop in Fairfield, CT, which, in fact, is a very nice place to rest. We ate, we bought some constitution state souvenirs, we fed some seagulls (where is CT anyways?) and bought some scratch tickets; but all we won were free round trip megabus tickets. After a few hours of mega-rest we found a bus to Hartford CT, which was not where we were going, but it is a very quiet place to be pretend homeless until we were rescued.

The lesson of the story? Never, ever get off the bus. It’s a mega-pain in the ass.

[5,38
103,91,75,69,71
post-1600","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-nyc","category-take-on-ny","tag-bus","tag-holidays","tag-new-yorkers","tag-transportation","tag-vacation
["GET
