To celebrate America’s birthday, why not enjoy a spectacular fireworks display while you are imprisoned like cattle and surrounded by men with guns? Apparently, that’s NYC’s idea of a block party in the land of the free. Some call that fun, I call it social anxiety. Seriously, how do we escape?\u00a0The only grassy \u201cfeels like the 4th of July\u201d areas were allotted to people who must have arrived on the 3rd, people in wheelchairs and people who probably could remember the days when celebrating holidays in NYC was actually fun. The thought of picking up a handicapped bum and telling the cops that,\u201cI just want to find a nice place for my bum\u201d did cross my mind. After about five miserable minutes into our expected three hour wait for the show, we picked up our sheet off the hot, dirty West Side highway and escaped. Whine.<\/p>\n

After walking at least 3 miles, one subway ride and removing one large piece of glass from Mike\u2019s shoe, we did however find our own little spot on the Hudson. After trying to find all the \u201cbest spots\u201d that were recommended, we ended up on a bench for two pretty much where we started. Cue the sparklers and sparkling wine!*<\/p>\n

We sat and people-ridiculed as the sun went down over the river<\/a>. We drank\u00a0mimosas out of plastic cups and the\u00a0 cops laughed at the idea of open container tickets in Manhattan; they were on “vacation” from the South Bronx. The mimosas were slightly warm and the fireworks were pretty spectacular.<\/p>\n

I guess enjoying\u00a0this city\u00a0is just finding your own spots. Recommendations are just opinions and everything we have stumbled upon on our own becomes our favorite. Maybe the key to NYC survival is finding your own bench, on your own path.<\/p>\n
